This is a list of quotes
from the Parent Club
Reports/President's Messages that mentioned the GSDCA Standard changes (1955-1968).
April 19, 1955
"Mr. Robbins reported that the Executive Committee feels
that the Standard should be revised; that it
should be shortened and clarified, with possibly the addition of diagrams. The Board
approved a committee consisting of Mrs. James A. Cole, Chairman, Mrs. M. Hartley Dodge,
and Lloyd C. Brackett, to work on the revision of the Standard."
June 15, 1955
"Mrs.
Cole, Chairman of the Committee on Revising the Standard, reported that Mrs.
Geraldine R. Dodge and Mr. Brackett will serve on the committee."
November 23, 1958
"Mr.
Fischer spoke next about the Illustrated Standard. He would like articles in the
Review asking that photographs be submitted of dogs with faults and hoped that
the Review would print each month a part of the Standard. Mr. Williamson thanked
Mr. Fischer for the work done on the committee. It was decided that the names
printed in the December Review applying for membership be included in the
Membership Booklet and to drop all delinquents as of December 15, those who have
not paid their dues by that time. It was hoped to send the three booklets out by
Christmas, but it was decided to use January 1, 1959, because some of the
changes in the Standard might not be approved. Mrs. Turner and Miss McIlvain
moved and seconded a motion made to this effect. Carried."
"The Standard next came up. Mr.
Fischer and Miss McCoy moved and seconded that we revise the Standard in
accordance with A.K.C. requests as to monorchidism and cryptorchidism. Carried.
Mrs. Baiter and Miss Colgate moved and seconded that weights indicated in the
Standard should be deleted. Approved. Miss Colgate and Mr. Collins moved and
seconded that we add the word "small" to the statement about more than
four missing pre-molars. Approved. This was to assure that the statement about
four missing pre-molars referred only to the eight small ones, not the eight
large pre-molars. Height was briefly discussed. No action on height was taken,
however. It was approved that the question on teeth be submitted to a committee
on revising the Standard as to the placing on the list of faults."
February 8, 1959
"The AKC approved the deletion of the section of the
Standard referring to monorchids and cryptorchids: did not approve
further recommendations as suggested at the December meeting."
"Mr. Williamson said Miss
Colgate and the Mrssrs. Cleveland, Mann and Brackett would be asked to work on a
Clarification of the Standard Committee, bearing in mind the recommendations of
the 1955 committee."
April 5, 1959
"The committee
recommendations will be sent to the Governors before the June meeting and then
submitted to the membership before its adoption is requested from the AKC."
June 1959 - President's Message
"An interesting and very important problem on which a Committee of the Board of
Governors is presently working is that of the revision of our Standard. Many of the most
knowledgeable and interested breeders and exhibitors are either on this Committee or have
been asked to comment on various aspects of the Standard.
"I would appreciate hearing from anyone interested in this very important matter.
We hope to have the revision completed for submission to the membership this summer, so
early comments will be appreciated."
June 10, 1959
"Mr. Williamson reported on
progress to date of the Committee
on the Revision of the Standard, pointing out the suggested disqualifying, very
serious, serious, and minor faults."
August 1969 - President's Message
"I have been very gratified
at the excellent interest and response shown in my column on the Standard
revision. There was particular interest as to the problem of temperament and
what to do about it. All of these comments and suggestions will be considered
before the final version goes out to the membership for approval."
August 12, 1959
" Copies of the Revised Standard for review purposes will be sent Governors
shortly, and, thereafter, the membership. The English, German and American Standards will
be published in the Review."
October 1959 - President's Message
"Elsewhere in this issue you will find printed the Standards of the German
SV,
the Alsatian League of England and our proposed American revision. I believe you will find
them more similar than not, as should be the case.
"Our present revision has had careful consideration by many of the top people in
the Breed. The Committee consisted of Lloyd Brackett, Reginald Cleveland, Adele Colgate,
Grant Mann, Mary Turner, Maureen Yentzen and myself. Also of great help, substituting for
Mr. Brackett at several meetings, was Virginia Vaughn. The recommendations submitted
several years ago by Eleanor Cole, Mrs. Dodge and Lloyd Brackett were also carefully
considered. Among others who made helpful suggestions which were included, was Marie
Leary.
"I hope you will read our revision with care. It is not perfect, but it is an
important step forward. As our breed again rides a crest of popularity, we must not permit
temperament to drag it down. This, above all else, is the major reason for this revision.
We must not fail our breed through fear of hurting a few individuals, whether human or
canine!"
October 3, 1959
"Because of the lateness of the hour, discussion of the
Standard was deferred until the next meeting."
December 1959 - President's Message
"We have made real progress in revising the Standard to reflect more nearly the
needs of the American public. This will continue, with submission to the membership of the
new Standard planned early next year."
April 10, 1960
"Standard Revision:
Vote for the change, 306, against 110. Standard as revised will
be sent to the Board of the AKC."
June 1960 - President's Message
"This new Standard was prepared after more than a year's
work. It was studied and criticized by all facets of the breed - old-timers,
Americanophiles, Germanophiles and the newer breeders, for example. The proposed Standard
was printed in full in the REVIEW, so that it could be studied, criticized and suggestions
made. Many were made and some, after evaluation by the committee, were incorporated in the
final version, now approved by the membership.
"I believe you have a much improved Standard. Certainly it
could still be made better, but it is an acceptable compromise arrived at by a very
dedicated committee with assists from many more interested shepherdists. The members of
the committee were Lloyd Brackett, Reginald M. Cleveland, Adele Colgate, Grant E. Mann,
Mary Turner, Virginia McCoy Vaughn, Maureen Yentzen and the writer. Not all were able to
attend ever meeting, but all advised as best they could and all participated one
way or another. In years to come I hope and trust that, as further changes are made, those
looking back will be able to say that we have helped preserve the breed and guide it
toward higher and higher worth and deserved acclaim."
